Ford government considering refunds for licence sticker renewals: Sources

By Richard Southern and Michael Talbot

Sources tell CityNews the province is considering giving refunds to people who renewed their licence plate stickers over the last two years.

Doug Ford’s government has not confirmed the news.

This comes on the heels of reports earlier this week that the province is considering eliminating the stickers altogether.

Sources told CityNews on Monday that Ford’s government may introduce a bill to scrap the stickers when the legislature reconvenes in late February — a move that would save drivers $120 a year.

The annual renewal process would remain, but drivers would not incur charges. Sources say the proposal was well-received by the cabinet, who recently reviewed it.

It would mean Ontario licence plates will no longer sport a sticker in the top right-hand corner.

Ontario Transportation Minister Caroline Mulroney wouldn’t confirm or deny the report, but said the province is considering “a number of options to cut costs for Ontarians.”
