There is an Extreme Cold Warning in place for much of the GTA, but warmer temperatures are expected by the middle of the week.

    By Kailie Annetts

The City of Toronto issued an extreme cold weather alert Saturday morning that will be in effect until further notice.

The city’s Medical Officer of Health issues these alerts when temperatures are forecasted to reach -15 Celsius or when the wind chill pushes temperatures to feel like -20 or colder.

Environment Canada is forecasting temperatures will feel like -22 overnight across Toronto and the GTA.

Four of the city’s warming centers will be operating this evening:

    • 129 Peter St.
    • 5800 Yonge St.
    • Exhibition Place, Better Living Centre, 195 Princes’ Blvd.
    • Scarborough Civic Centre, 150 Borough Dr.

Warming centers are typically opened at 7 p.m. on the day that an alert is issued and remain open until 12 p.m. on the day the alert is terminated.

City officials say Streets to Homes outreach teams will continue to provide enhanced street outreach response to help support and encourage those living outside to come indoors. Throughout the winter, outreach staff hands out blankets, sleeping bags and warm winter clothing.
