A male security guard was arrested and charged after staff discovered a hidden camera in a woman’s washroom at an Ajax hospital.

An anonymous staff member informed CityNews that a security guard had been detained at Lakeridge Health Pickering Ajax Hospital after devices were uncovered across the building.

The worker says the first recording device was found in a staff washroom on the fourth floor.

A spokesperson for Lakeridge Health confirmed the incident, saying the safety, security and privacy of all team members and patients is their top priority.

“Today, we became aware that a recording device was discovered within a washroom at our Ajax Pickering site,” Sharon Navvaro said in an email to CityNews.

“The Durham Region Police Service (DRPS) were immediately notified. As this is now an active DRPS police investigation, we are unable to provide any further details at this time.”

Durham police later confirmed a 23-year-old man had been arrested.

Investigators were first notified around noon on Thursday after a female staff member at the hospital located a cellphone in the washroom that was recording.

Sgt. George Tudos says the phone was found propped up under the sink. Further investigation revealed that the cellphone belonged to the suspect working at the site.

Police arrested 23-year-old Steven Medard of Ajax, who was charged with voyeurism. He was later released on an undertaking.

His cellphone was seized as evidence, police say, but add that no other recording devices were located or taken “at this time.”
