Ford’s approval rating drops 4 points ahead of Ontario election in June: poll

Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s approval rating has dropped four points to 37 per cent ahead of the provincial election in June, according to a new poll.

It sits just three points below where his approval rating was when he won the 2018 election at 40 per cent. It’s been on a rollercoaster since then, dropping at one point to 26 per cent in September of 2019 before spiking following the first COVID-19 wave at 62 per cent in the second quarter of 2020.

According to Maru Public Opinion, garning 37 per cent of the vote is enough for a majority government in the election should he maintain his current rating through the second quarter. Their latest voter integration poll show him at this level with the rest of the opposition split.

The premiers with the top approval ratings in the country are B.C. Premier John Horgan and Tim Houston of Nova Scotia with 64 per cent.

Rounding out the bottom is Alberta’s Jason Kenney and Heather Stefanson of Manitoba, both at 30 per cent.

Ford was one of three premiers whose approval ratings dropped in the first quarter of 2022 and sits third last in the rankings.

He has been on the campaign trail for the last couple of months, including sharing his 30-year plan for GTA transit and eliminating license plate renewal fees.

Ford’s last budget of this term will be delivered on April 30 and is expected to lay out the Progressive Conservatives spending plans just weeks before the election is expected to be held on June 2,

The province has also lifted almost all COVID-19 measures, including proof of vaccination requirements and capacity limits, with masks mandates being removed on March 21.

The survey was conducted between Feb. 12 and 23 using 5,308 randomly selected Canadian adults who are Maru Voice Canada online panelists and has a margin of error of plus or minus 1.4 per cent, 19 times out of 20.,
