Ontario extends tuition freeze for universities, colleges

Ontario is extending its tuition freeze for college and universities for another year — the freeze will now last through the 2022-2023 academic year.

“Our government recognizes that students and their families make huge sacrifices to attend college and university, so our government will continue to look for ways to reduce financial barriers for learners,” said Jill Dunlop, Minister of Colleges and Universities, in a statement.

“By freezing tuition for another year, we are saying yes to ensuring that students have access to affordable, high-quality postsecondary education, and reducing the financial strain on families who have already faced so many challenges throughout the pandemic.”

This is the third consecutive year of the freeze, first announced for the 2020-2021 school year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The province previously announced an extension last April.

The extension comes amid a number of cost-saving announcements made by the Ford government ahead of the upcoming provincial election in June.
