Rain and thunderstorms expected in the long weekend weather forecast could put a damper on the unofficial start to summer.
CityNews 680’s forecast is calling for morning showers Friday to kick off the weekend before becoming cloudy with sunny breaks and humid for the rest of the day. Temperatures are expected to reach 27 C but will feel like 35 with the humidex.
For those who are heading north Friday, the drive will likely be met with thunderstorms. The forecast is calling for the risk of late afternoon and early evening storms, some of them severe, for parts of cottage country.
Meteorologist Natasha Ramsahai says the storms will target the areas around Georgian Bay, east to Parry Sound to North Bay and Algonquin.
“These areas are going to be at greatest risk for some very strong potentially damaging wind gusts up to 90 kilometres per hour and up to toonie-sized hail,” she said, adding there could also be a tornado risk if the storms develop earlier in the day.
Saturday will see more clouds with a chance of showers and the thunderstorms from cottage country moving through the GTA in the afternoon. It will stay warm and humid throughout the day with a high of 25 C, feeling more like 34.

By Sunday, the morning will start off warm with a high of 21 C, but a cold front moving in will put an end to the heat and humidity. There is a risk of morning thunderstorms, turning to a mainly cloudy afternoon with gusting winds.
The rain risk finally lets up for a mainly sunny but cooler Holiday Monday, getting up to a high of 17 C. “Because high pressure is building, it looks like winds are going to decrease and skies will remain clear. That could be excellent news for fireworks weather,” says Ramasahai.
