A 16-year-old male suspect is potentially facing weapons charges after forcing an Oakville school into lockdown following reports of a man with a firearm spotted in the area.
White Oaks Secondary School on Montclair Drive was placed under lockdown while nearby schools Ecole Gaetan Gervais, Montclair Public School, St. Michael Elementary, Munns and Ecole Elementaire Du Chene, were placed in Hold and Secure.
After a search of the school, the suspect was located on school property and a replica handgun was seized by police. Halton police say he is potentially facing weapons-related charges.
All school safety procedures have been lifted, and no injuries were reported.
School-related incidents involving guns have increased recently in Toronto and the GTA.
On Tuesday, three teens were arrested following two separate incidents concerning pellet guns at west-end Toronto schools.
Police were called to a school near Bloor Street West and Dundas Street West, where it is alleged a 15-year-old boy carrying a pellet gun fired and shot a 17-year-old girl inside the school. She suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Last week, Toronto police shot and killed a man carrying a pellet gun near a Scarborough school, resulting in various lockdowns. Responding officers believed the man was armed with a deadly weapon, but the pellet gun was later recovered at the scene.
Two teens were taken into custody after allegedly making threats with fake guns in Aurora, resulting in two York Region schools being placed in a Hold and Secure.
Replica firearms were discovered in their possession. No one was injured.
