Two men arrested after slashing movie theatre screens across southern Ontario

Two men have been arrested after several movie screens were vandalized in Oakville, Richmond Hill, Burlington and Waterloo.

The first incident occurred in November 2021 when two males slashed the screens at the Cineplex Silver City Cinemas on Winston Park Drive in Oakville and Cineplex Silver City located in Richmond Hill.

The same suspects struck again on February 23, cutting two threatre screens at Film.ca on Speers Road in Oakville before committing the same offence at Cine Starz on Brant Street in Burlington and the Princess Cinemas in Waterloo.

No one was injured during these incidents while the total damage to the theatre screens was pegged at $100,000.

Police believe that the theatres were targeted due to the film “Bheemla Nayak” — a 2022 Indian Telugu-language action-drama flick starring Pawan Kalyan — which was playing at the time of each incident.

Following an investigation, Halton police arrested 30-year-old Dean Priestly of Toronto and 38-year-old Mohammed Yousafzai of Pickering. Priestly faces two counts of mischief over $5,000 while Yousafzai has been charged with five counts of mischief over $5,000 and conspiracy to commit and indictable offence.
