Significant rainfall soaks Toronto, GTA to start the week

It is a soggy Monday morning in the GTA with some much-needed rainfall expected to last well into the afternoon.

The heavy rainfall in the region will taper to showers that last until around 3 p.m.

The steady rain could bring up to 30 mm with flooding possible in some spots. It will likely mean headaches for some drivers, with ponding and pooling on certain roadways.

The development of a thunderstorm is possible in the late-afternoon on Monday, which could bring even more rain.

After a drier than usual June and start to July, the wet weather will be a welcome reality for many.

Toronto last got rain on July 11, and so far this month there has been around 9 mm of rainfall. The average rainfall for the city in July is 75.7 mm.

Toronto received just over half its usual rainfall in June, recording 40.4 mm of rain for the month. The average amount of precipitation in the city for June is 71.5 mm.

The Canadian Drought Monitor (CDM) is currently rating parts of southern Ontario, including Toronto, as ‘Abnormally Dry’ — the first category in its five-category drought monitoring system. ‘Abnormally Dry’ droughts are considered to be one-in-three year events.

More rain is expected through the week with a chance of showers, and even some thunderstorms, in the forecast for Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
