Subway service resumes on stretch of Line 2 following morning fire

Trains are running again along a large stretch of the Bloor-Danforth line after an electrical fire shut down subway service for nearly seven hours on Tuesday morning.

Police said the fire started at Bloor-Yonge Station just after 7 a.m. under the platform at the station, during the height of the morning rush hour.

As a result, there was subway service on Line 2 between St. George and Pape stations and shuttle buses were running.

Trains were also not stopping on Line 1 at Bloor-Yonge due to the investigation. People were unable to board a train in any direction at the station.

Subway service on both lines resumed around 1:30 p.m.

The TTC said after the fire was out, they had to clean up the area and run test trains. They noted that any additional repairs will be done without affecting service.

The cause of the electrical fire is not yet known.

Large crowds form outside subway stations

During the subway shutdown, Toronto police warned drivers to use caution in the area as large crowds forming outside Broadview and Pape subway stations were walking into traffic.

TTC staff and security officers worked to squeeze as many people as they could onto the shuttle buses, but some commuters told CityNews there were significant delays waiting for the packed buses.

“The buses are really, really slow,” said one rider. “It makes the whole experience so inconvenient. The city roads are blocked because of all these shuttle buses going through.”

“I waited for about 45 minutes for a bus,” said another. “People aren’t very happy with the TTC right now.”
