Environment Canada has lifted most of the severe thunderstorm watches in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) as the city braces for much-needed rainfall into Tuesday.

Canada’s weather agency had warned of “dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing damaging wind gusts and heavy rain.”

In the immediate GTA, Halton and Peel regions were under the thunderstorm watch, with Environment Canada forecasters suggesting up to 40 millimetres of rain is possible. That alert has since been terminated.

Severe thunderstorm warnings remain in effect for Elgin and Simcoe-Delhi-Norfolk regions.

“Thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon ahead of a cold front tracking through the area,” meteorologists with the weather agency said, adding there could be wind gusts of up to 90 km/h accompanied by heavy downpours.

“Very strong wind gusts can damage buildings, down trees and blow large vehicles off the road. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.”

Agency staff said Toronto could see strong thunderstorms develop Monday evening, with showers possible into the night and early morning hours. It’s expected to be cloudy early Tuesday before skies clear in the afternoon.

Temperatures will remain comfortable in Toronto for Tuesday, but humidity is set to soar by mid-week. The threat of non-severe storms will linger in southeastern Ontario on Tuesday.
