One man is dead, another in hospital after an early morning crash on Dufferin near Steeles. It's not clear what caused the collision. Carl Hanstke reports.

A man is dead and a woman is in hospital following a head-on collision in North York on Friday morning.

The crash occurred on Dufferin Street at Gerry Fitzgerald Drive, just south of Steeles Avenue, around 4:15 a.m.

Police say a 31-year-old woman was driving a 2019 Blue Nissan Murano northbound on Dufferin and a 57-year-old man was driving a 2010 Grey Toyota Corolla in the opposite direction.

The vehicles collided head-on just south of Gerry Fitzgerald Drive.

Both drivers were taken to hospital, the man with life-threatening injuries and the woman with minor injuries. The man eventually succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.

One witness tells CityNews crews needed to use the jaws of life to extract the now deceased driver from their vehicle.

Dufferin was closed south of Steeles for the investigation but the roads have since reopened.
