Toronto police say two people died at the scene of a stabbing in North York on Friday afternoon.
Police initially tweeted that a man had stabbed a woman during an altercation at Bathurst Street and Ellerslie Avenue at around 3:30 p.m.
In a follow-up tweet, police said three injured people were found at the scene.
Two of them were without vital signs and were later declared dead.
Police now say the third person, a man who suffered minor injuries, is the suspect in the case. He’s in police custody and is being treated at a hospital.
No other suspects are being sought at this time, and the area has been closed for an investigation. The homicide unit has taken over the case.
Acting Inspector Roger Desrochers told CityNews the two deceased people and the suspect were known to each other but wouldn’t elaborate on their relationship or a possible motive.
Bathurst Street was closed for several hours as police investigated.
The nearby UJA Federation of Toronto’s Sherman Campus, described on its website as a “hub of Jewish life,” said the crime did not take place on its grounds and doesn’t appear to be hate-motivated.
We are in ongoing communication with Toronto Police. Community members should be aware that the incident under investigation did not take place on our Sherman Campus, is entirely unrelated to our community, and does not appear to be hate-motivated. (2/5)
