York regional police say they’re on the hunt for three suspects after an attempted carjacking in Markham early Thursday morning.
Police were called to the Macrill Road and Goldring Crescent area at around 2:30 a.m.
Investigators say a man was driving a 2020 Mercedes-Benz C-Class on a residential street when a dark-coloured vehicle pulled up beside him at a stop.
“A male suspect approached his vehicle with an unknown weapon, demanding the car,” police said in a release.
“The victim drove off in his vehicle and was able to lose the suspect vehicle before phoning police.”
The suspect is described as a Black male, 20 to 30 years old with a slim build. He was wearing a black T-shirt and black pants.
Two other suspects were inside the suspect vehicle, but descriptions were not available.
It’s the latest in a rash of carjackings and carjacking attempts throughout the Greater Toronto Area.
Peel police also reported an attempted carjacking in Mississauga on Friday.
It happened at Central Parkway West and Burnhamthorpe Road West. The driver of a Toyota Camry was assaulted in a parking lot.
Police say the suspect did not get away with the car and is currently being sought.
Last Sunday a man was assaulted and had his vehicle stolen from his Brampton driveway in an incident caught on home surveillance video.
A suspect in that case, a 23-year-old man, has been arrested and is facing charges.
The most high-profile incident took place back in May when Maple Leafs star forward Mitch Marner was carjacked at gunpoint in Etobicoke shortly after the Leafs were eliminated from the playoffs.
Marner, who wasn’t physically injured, spoke out about the lingering psychological effects of the crime.
“It definitely does affect you mentally,” he admitted. “It definitely does come into your mind for a couple of weeks straight there … we were lucky enough to have people around that we could talk to and have these stories to tell and get feedback.
“So, definitely, mental health is something important to me and my family — and something that we really take seriously.”
