Police identify boy, 17, shot and killed in Scarborough

A 17-year-old boy who was shot and killed near an apartment complex in Scarborough on Wednesday has been identified.

Police say Zaybion Lawrence, of Toronto, died in hospital after the shooting in the Gilder Drive and Eglinton Avenue East area at around 3:43 p.m.

Police say five teens were seen running from the area, but it’s not yet clear if they were suspects or were running after hearing shots fired.

No suspect descriptions are currently available.

Police say Lawrence died in hospital just before 4:30 p.m. from “multiple gunshot wounds.”

Nearby school, Glen Ravine Junior Public School, was placed under hold-and-secure while police combed the area, but it was lifted a short time later.

A witness living in a nearby apartment said she heard shots and ran to her balcony, where she saw five people running down Gilder Drive.

“This is scary, it’s sad, it happens at your door,” she said. “I’m nervous.”

The homicide unit is now investigating.
