Cold night in store for parts of the GTA, frost advisory issued

You can certainly feel the chill in the air with the official arrival of autumn this week.

Environment Canada has issued a frost advisory for much of southern Ontario including parts of the GTA, as temperatures are expected to be near the freezing mark on Friday night.

The advisory covers northern Durham and York regions including Uxbridge and Newmarket, as well as cottage country for areas like Barrie, Collingwood, Huntsville, Parry Sound, and Bracebridge.

“Frost advisories are issued when temperatures are expected to reach the freezing mark during the growing season, leading to potential damage and destruction to plants and crops,” the national weather agency said.

“Cover up plants, especially those in frost-prone areas. Take preventative measures to protect frost-sensitive plants and trees.”

The temperature in the Toronto area will dip to a low of 8 C overnight, which is above the advisory criteria.

CityNews meteorologist Jill Taylor said mostly cooler temperatures are expected to continue into the weekend with rain moving in early Sunday morning. The forecasted highs for the weekend are between 17-19 C.

The new season officially arrived at 9:03 p.m. Thursday.
