Brampton’s Nikki Kaur fired from city hall one day after election

Nikki Kaur says she was fired one day after placing second behind Brampton mayor Patrick Brown in the municipal election.
Kaur, a now-former director with the City of Brampton, claims she was terminated without notice.
“I ran a strong campaign for Mayor of Brampton to restore integrity and honesty at City Hall. Last night, I finished second to Patrick Brown in the election,” Kaur said.
“[Tuesday] afternoon, without explanation or notice, I was terminated from my employment at the City of Brampton.”
Brown was declared the winner with nearly 60 per cent of the vote on Monday, and Kaur was a distant second with 25.5 per cent of the vote tally.
Kaur says the incumbent mayor is attempting to silence her for what she calls alleged wrongdoing and mismanagement at Brampton’s city hall.
“I will not be silenced and will never stop standing up for what is right,” Kaur said. “I have retained legal counsel and will fight this injustice. Any further comment on this matter will be through my lawyers.”

A spokesperson for mayor Brown did not provide comment when reached by CityNews.
Kaur, a former municipal employee, brought forward unverified allegations as a whistleblower against top city officials.
Heading into election night, Kaur had the backing of several experienced political players, but Brown ultimately prevailed and escaped as the winner.

After being re-elected on Monday night, Brown said he ran a fair campaign despite against what he referred to as “the politics of negativity.”
“We ran a positive campaign. We refused to engage in the ugly side of politics and focus on what we’ve achieved in Brampton over the last four years and what we hope to achieve in the next four years,” Brown said.
As mayor, Brown faced allegations of financial and contract irregularities and a council sharply divided by pro- and anti-Brown allegiances.
In July, Brown was disqualified from the federal leadership race over an allegation that he breached federal financing laws.
