Arrest warrant issued in shooting death of soccer referee Edwin Farley Alvarado Quintero

An arrest warrant has been issued for a 19-year-old man wanted in connection with the shooting death of a soccer referee at a North York sports complex earlier this month.

Police say Christian Cuxum of Toronto is wanted on two counts of attempted murder and one count of second degree murder in the death of Edwin Farley Alvarado Quintero, a 49-year-old from Woodbridge.

Police were called to La Liga Sports Complex on Finch Avenue West near Alness Street after shots rang out on the evening of Oct. 9.

When they arrived they found three men suffering from gunshot wounds. All three were taken to hospital where one was later pronounced dead. The other two were listed with injuries ranging from serious to life threatening. No further update on their condition has been released.

Last week, police were seeking to identify four persons of interest in connection with the incident.

Futsal Canada, the organization that promotes a variant of soccer played indoors, called the death of Quintero “a terrible and senseless act of violence” while La Liga Indoor Soccer said in a statement that it was working with police to assist what they call an “isolated and unprecedented” event while also taking the necessary measures “so that events that may affect healthy coexistence do not occur again.”

Someone claiming to be a fellow referee who established a GoFundMe campaign on the family’s behalf to help with funeral costs says Quintero was “doing his job and passion as a referee” when a fight broke out inside the complex and escalated to the point where someone fired shots into the venue. The online campaign has raised more than $18,600.
