The already frustrating downtown delays and detours are about to be compounded thanks to another construction project that will see a portion of Yonge Street closed until the beginning of December.
A Metrolinx bridge that spans Yonge Street south of Front Street is being demolished to make way for a new pedestrian bridge. The work is scheduled to take place starting each Friday at 7 a.m. right through until Sunday at 10 p.m. for the next six weekends, further testing the patience of annoyed Torontonians.
“It’s chaotic. This is just completely insane,” one condo resident in the area tells CityNews over the loud sounds of jackhammers and construction equipment.
Yonge Street is closed from Front Street to Lake Shore Boulevard with northbound and southbound vehicular traffic being redirected. As well, access to Yonge Street from the westbound Gardiner Expressway at the York-Bay-Yonge off-ramp will also be closed, further putting a strain on the remaining westbound off-ramps at Spadina and Jarvis.

Motorists will find detour options compounded by another major project which has just started on Adelaide Street as part of the Ontario Line subway construction.
Since Monday, Adelaide Street from Duncan to Bay streets, have been reduced to one shared lane for vehicles and cyclists and there is a partial closure of the intersection at Simcoe Street, with no through traffic south of Adelaide Street. As well the intersection of Adelaide Street and University Avenue is reduced to one lane in each direction. This work is not expected to be completed until mid-to-late November.
Meanwhile, GO train service on the Lakeshore West, Lakeshore East and Barrie GO lines will also be impacted this weekend due to construction.
