Students at a Scarborough high school are returning to class Tuesday morning after a stabbing inside the building on Monday.

A 17-year-old male student remains in hospital in stable condition after being stabbed at Birchmount Park Collegiate Institute, near Danforth Avenue and Birchmount Road, around 3 p.m.

The boy was initially rushed to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. Toronto police tell CityNews he is lucky to be alive.

The stabbing happened inside the building, and the victim is a Grade 12 student at the school.

The school was under lockdown, which has since been lifted as students and staff safely exited the building. There is no threat to public safety, and no other injuries were reported.

There is no word on potential suspects.

Const. Laura Brabant says parents and guardians can meet their children at the parking lot at entrance 4, located on the east side of the school.

This is the second stabbing incident at Birchmount Park Collegiate Institute dating back to the spring when a 14-year-old boy was injured on April 25.

A 15 and 16-year-old boy were arrested a few days later and faced multiple charges, including assault and assault with a weapon. The 14-year-old victim was treated at a hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
