The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate after one man was fatally shot and another man was injured during a confrontation with plainclothes officers as part of an investigation into a recent string of home invasions in Markham.
The province’s police watchdog said the shooting happened just after 7 a.m. on Friday outside a residence on Eyer Drive, near Rodick and Macrill roads.
York Regional Police confirmed undercover officers were investigating the armed robberies when an incident occurred involving multiple suspects in a white vehicle.
One man was shot dead, and another was injured and taken to a hospital, where he remains in stable condition. Two men, including the one in hospital, and one woman, were arrested and are in police custody. All three are 26 years old, while the age of the deceased male was not provided.
SIU spokesperson Monica Hudon said it’s believed one of the male suspects was armed at the time of the shooting.
“There was a confrontation between occupants of the vehicle and police officers. Two officers discharged their firearms, and two men were struck,” Hudon said.
“One of the men was pronounced deceased at the scene, and the second man was taken to a hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.”

Authorities in York Region said earlier this week it was ramping up an investigation into as many as six recent armed home invasions in Markham.
Authorities said the robberies happened between Sept. 26 and Nov. 21, with most of the home invasions occurring between 3 a.m. and 4:30 a.m.

Police confirmed the suspects were armed in every incident, though no physical injuries were reported.
A woman that lives in the neighbourhood tells CityNews she was out for a walk on Friday morning when she noticed the police cars.
“I was concerned because I have friends who live on this street,” she said. “I have never encountered anything like this. I am quite shocked.”
The SIU investigates the conduct of officials, including police officers, that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault, or a firearm’s discharge at a person.
