‘RIP Nonno’: Maple Leafs defenceman speaks about murdered grandfather

Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Victor Mete is thanking everyone who reached out to offer support following the death of his grandfather in a mass shooting at Vaughan condo last weekend.

Vittorio Panza was among the five victims shot to death by Francesco Villi at the building located near Jane Street and Rutherford Road. Panza’s partner, Rita Camilleri, was also killed.

Villi, who was involved in a protracted dispute with members of the condo board, was shot and killed by police at the scene.

“I would like to say thank you to everyone for their condolences, prayers, and support during this terrible time,” Mete wrote in a brief statement posted to Twitter while also singling out first responders for their “brave response.”

“Our hearts are also with the other victims and their families that are going through this unspeakable tragedy.”

He ended the statement with the words, “RIP Nonno”

Mete was born and raised in Woodbridge, Ont. to parents Joseph and Mary. He was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in 2016 and also played for the Ottawa Senators. He signed with the Maple Leafs in July 2022.

Mete has played 11 games with the Leafs this season, registering two assists. He has not played since the tragic shooting.

According to a tribute written by family members, Panza was passionate about music. He was a husband, a father to three daughters, and a proud ‘nonno’ to seven grandchildren.
