‘I have two sets of twins. This is life’: Brampton couple welcomes 4 children in same year

A 26-year-old Brampton couple spontaneously had two sets of twins born nine months apart in one year. Quadruple the trouble and quadruple the love.

“[Twins] don’t run on either side, so we were just like, ‘Woah, how did this happen?’ We were delightfully surprised,” Reva Marie Nicholson said in an interview with CityNews.

Nicholson and her husband, Romaine Maurice McFarlane, say it was a year full of surprises. It all started in February 2022, when the Brampton couple’s first set of twins arrived three months earlier than anticipated.

Nicholson’s water broke at just 27 weeks. Luckily, she says she was near the local hospital when it happened.

“Police officers on bicycles escorted us over.”

Just like that, baby girl Kyra and baby boy Shamar were welcomed into the world, with both newborns spending the first few weeks of their lives in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). A month after bringing them home, Nicholson and McFarlane learned she was pregnant again.

“I was convinced it was one; I was convinced it was one [baby] the entire time,” she explained.

She was wrong. Twins, yet again.

“I was like, ‘OK, here we go again.’ I don’t know any different, so here we go again.”

McFarlane said he was in disbelief, and when his wife informed him of the news, he sat in his truck for at least two hours contemplating.

“I was like, ‘Wow. So now I have four children. I have two sets of twins. This is life,” he said.

As if that wasn’t enough surprises for one year, the Brampton couple said the second set of twins arrived two months early (they weren’t due until Jan. 2023 but arrived in November). Four babies in one year. 

This time it was two girls, Mya and Moriah. The girls’ parents say they remain in the NICU, and the couple has been back and forth between the hospital and home for the past month.

“It’s definitely tough because I had to recover from the C-section, as well,” Nicholson said. “I’ve spent most of the time in the first three weeks pumping for the girls in the NICU and getting myself together. Just saying hi and bye to them.”

The new mother of four says it’s been an adjustment.

“I will check on them on FaceTime, and we kind of have that moment together in the hospital,” Nicholson added, noting that the couple is hopeful the two twin girls will reunite with them at home later this week.

“We would not even be able to do half of what we’re doing without them.”

When asked whether they plan on having more children, Nicholson laughed and said she was content.

“Honestly, it’s a blessing. We’re blessed.”
