Hearing to be held Jan. 5 for 8 teen girls charged with murder

Eight girls between the ages of 13 and 16 will appear in court next week on murder charges. Their identities will not be published due to the Youth Criminal Justice Act

Eight teenage girls charged with murder in the death of a 59-year-old man earlier this month are set to appear again in youth court on Jan. 5, 2023.

The girls – who range in age from 13 to 16 – have been charged with second-degree murder after the unidentified man was viciously assaulted and stabbed by the group in the early morning hours of Dec. 18 in the area of York Street, University Avenue and Front Street West.

During a brief court appearance on Thursday, a lawyer for one of the girls requested Crown lawyers disclose a video of the alleged attack posted on the popular online video platform TikTok.

A judge said some of the teens are still in the process of retaining a lawyer so that’s also why the case needs to be put over, when it is expected a date will be set for bail hearings.

Homicide Squad Det.-Sgt. Terry Browne indicated the girls connected on social media and met up in the city’s downtown core, where they were allegedly involved in two fights before the fatal stabbing.

“They come from varying parts of the city … we don’t know how or why they met that evening and why the destination was downtown Toronto. We don’t know how long they have been acquainted,” he said.

The girls cannot be identified due to provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act because they are all under the age of 18.

The name of the victim has not been released but police said the man recently accessed Toronto’s shelter system and had a “very supportive family in the area.”
