Toronto police warn of rise in Kijiji, Facebook Marketplace thefts near North York school

By Lucas Casaletto

Toronto police are out with a public service announcement due to a rise in thefts from Kijiji and Facebook Marketplace ads.

Investigators noted that between Dec. 2021 and Jan. 5, 2023, officers responded to several theft calls at Gulfstream Public School in North York.

It’s alleged that a seller will post an ad on these websites relating to electronic products. Interested buyers will arrange to meet the seller near Gulfstream Public School. Once both parties meet, police say the buyer will grab the device from the seller without paying and flee.

No physical injuries have been reported, and police believe multiple suspects are involved.

Authorities are urging members of the public to exercise caution when looking to purchase goods online. They suggest meeting in a busy area where security cameras are present and having a second person in attendance.
