OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt says witnesses reported seeing two pedestrians outside of an SUV in the shoulder of the express lanes. One of the pedestrians was struck by a passenger vehicle and knocked into a live lane before being struck again by a passing transport truck.

Schmidt says the transport truck briefly pulled over at the scene before driving off. The first vehicle remained at the scene.

A male pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. The second pedestrian, a female, was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police are now searching for the truck that left the scene. Investigators are also trying to determine why the two pedestrians pulled over and got out of their vehicle.

The express lanes of the highway were closed from Renforth Drive to Highway 403 for the investigation. The lanes reopened shortly before 11 a.m.

Anyone with information or dashcam footage is being asked to contact police.
