A lockdown has been lifted at East York Alternative Secondary School after a fight broke out in a facility washroom and a gunshot was fired.
The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) tweeted about the lockdown at the school, located on Cosburn Avenue near Coxwell Avenue, just before 2 p.m. on Thursday.
Acting police Insp. Jason Albanese says officers were called to the school shortly after 1 p.m. for reports of a fight inside a washroom.
Albanese said police located evidence of gunfire, and it’s believed a single shot was fired into the ground. It ricocheted off the wall and hit an outreach worker’s shoe.
Police later said a man was taken to a local hospital, but his injuries were not life-threatening.
There are six persons of interest in the investigation, as Albanese said that the group fled on foot. Police are believed to know some of the suspects involved, and Albanese confirmed that some are students.
A weapon has not been recovered, and the lockdown was lifted. There is no threat to the public at this time, Albanese said.
