The Ontario Fire Marshal’s office says a townhouse explosion in Kitchener that sent four people to hospital is criminal in nature.
Emergency crews responded to the home on Elm Ridge Drive, in the area of Queen’s Boulevard and Fischer-Hallman Road, around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday night.
Police confirmed an explosion occurred inside a residence and caused “extensive damage.” Neighbouring units also sustained structural damage due to the blast.
The fence and windows facing the street, on the ground and second floor are all smashed. Debris from the home is also scattered around the yard, including a barbecue propane tank and bicycle.
Two people were sent to hospital after an 11:30 fire last night at a townhome on Elm Ridge Drive in Kitchener. The front side of the home is heavily damaged and exposed, surrounded by police tape. Details now on @CityNewsKIT or https://t.co/UrH5a04nHy pic.twitter.com/WfVjST9hkU

A man and woman were transported to a hospital outside of the region with serious injuries. Two children who were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries have since been released.
On Friday, Waterloo police said a search of the damaged home uncovered evidence that is consistent with illegal drug production.
Police add the investigation is ongoing and charges are pending.
