Toronto police are concerned over an increase in distracted drivers watching TV behind the wheel after a motorist was caught doing just that.
Officers pulled over the driver just after 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday in the Spadina Avenue and Front Street West area.
“You can’t watch TV and drive even though the phone is mounted to the dash,” a spokesperson with Toronto Traffic Services said.
The motorist was fined $615 through the Highway Safety Act.
“More and more, our team is seeing a concerning trend of drivers watching TV when driving,” Toronto Traffic Services added. “It’s too bad this needs to be said.”
Data collected in Ontario on collisions from 2013 show that one person is injured in a distracted-driving collision every half hour, and a driver using a cell phone is four times more likely to crash than a driver focusing on the road.
A driver could also face more charges for careless driving if they endanger other people as a result of any distraction.
