If you are looking for great Mexican food there’s a spot nestled in the area of Davenport and Dupont, just around the corner from the Republic of Rathnelly.

The tacos are delicious, the guacamole is fresh, and they serve a wide selection of tequila and mezcal.

“Once you get Playa Cabana in your blood, it’s tough to get away from it,” said operations director Josh Standing. “Everybody here is such a family, and we just get all along and try to put out the best Mexican that we can.”

This location first opened in 2011, the first of several restaurants part of the Mas Playas group started by Torontonian David Sidhu.

“He was worked in New York and Miami in Mexican restaurants and came back home to Toronto and opened up his own place … Mexican food was kind of on trend at the time and then Dave filled the gap in the market,” explained Standing.

He said there are three things almost everyone comes in for now.

“Guacamole and chips, we make [it] in house, Dave’s Margarita, which is a very popular Margarita, and our barbacoa tinga tacos.”

The cozy spot also features a happening patio when it’s warm out

“Our establishment is an old house, so you come [and you are] entering into someone’s home, greeted by staff you’re familiar with. And we treat you like family and that’s kind of what it’s all about in the community here,” shared Standing.
