TTC bus driver pulls seniors to safety before train strikes car in Scarborough

Four seniors are lucky to be alive after their car got stuck on train tracks in Scarborough and a fast-acting bus driver came to their aid.

Police say a driver mistakenly turned onto the GO train tracks at a rail crossing on Finch Avenue east of Kennedy Road just before 6 p.m. on Thursday.

The vehicle became stuck when the driver, realizing their error, attempted to make a U-turn and return to the roadway.

With a train approaching, a TTC bus driver ran over and opened the doors of the car. The worker was able to unbuckle all four elderly passengers and help them to safety.

Moments later, the car was struck by a northbound passing train and became wedged underneath it. No injuries were reported.

The TTC has confirmed the heroic efforts of the bus driver and say “formal commendation will be awarded.”

“Another act of incredibly heroic work by a TTC frontline employee,” reads a tweet from TTC media relations.

Metrolinx advised of a delay along the Stouffville line on Thursday evening due to a train striking a vehicle near Agincourt GO Station.

Finch Avenue was temporarily closed for a police investigation but the road has since reopened.
