After two days of record-breaking spring-like temperatures earlier this week, wintry weather has returned to Toronto and the GTA with freezing rain making for a tricky Friday morning commute.

The mixed precipitation arrived Thursday evening and continued through the overnight. The messy and slippery conditions have led to bus cancellations in Durham Region.

The Durham Student Transportation Services says all school buses are cancelled for the Durham District School Board and Durham Catholic District School Board.

Most other school boards across the GTA have a P.A. day on Friday.

A freezing rain warning for the city has now come to an end, but motorists are still being advised to exercise caution on the roads.

“Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery,” Environment Canada warned. “Take extra care when walking or driving in affected areas. Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions.”

The GTA also woke up to a windchill near -14 as temperatures returned to seasonal for this time of the year. It may come as a shock for some after record-breaking warmth for two straight days this week, which saw daytime highs climb well into the double digits on Wednesday.

CityNews 680 meteorologist Jill Taylor said it will be colder early Saturday morning with a windchill near -17 C. But don’t fret because warmer temperatures are in store for the Family Day weekend.

“It is a cold start to our morning, even colder tomorrow, but then warmer air, milder air returns for the rest of the Family Day long weekend,” Taylor said.

Some sunshine is in store later on Saturday as the temperature is expected to climb to 5 C. Cloudy conditions return on Sunday and Monday with highs near 5-7 C.
