Family of entrepreneur killed in Yorkville in 2018 offering $250,000 reward to help find his killer

By Fil Martino

This week on the Tracking a Killer: The Cold Case Files podcast, Fil Martino and Madison Fitzpatrick take a look at the unsolved shooting death of Matthew Staikos.

On May 28, 2018, 37-year-old Matthew Staikos was at a late business dinner in Toronto’s Yorkville area. When the young entrepreneur came out of the restaurant with a colleague, someone jumped out of a silver Mercedes and shot Staikos from behind in what police describe as an ambush.

Police have not been able to find that gunman. The family has since hired David Perry, a retired homicide investigator and Chairman of Investigative Solutions Network, a private investigation firm.

Perry said this was a very high-profile case because of the location in Yorkville and because the victim did not fit any kind of scenario or profile that would lead anyone to believe he would become the victim of a homicide.

“He was a very successful entrepreneur, had sold some original businesses that he was working on and was really well on his way, at his age, to continuing that success as an entrepreneur, so the last guy you’d expect would be the victim of a homicide,” said Perry.

Matthew’s brother George Staikos said they hired a private investigator because they just weren’t getting answers.

“We were not going to let this go. We needed answers. We needed closure,” said Staikos.

The Staikos family has also put up a $250,000 cash reward for anyone with information that can assist in solving the case.

Police are urging anyone with information about this homicide to given them a call. You can also contact Crime Stoppers with any tips anonymously.
