A 21-year-old man is dead, and two other men are injured following a daytime shooting in a parking lot outside Fairview Mall in North York.
Officers were called to the Sheppard Avenue East and Don Mills Road area just after 4 p.m. Monday for reports of a shooting.
Police initially located two 25-year-old men suffering from gunshot wounds. They were rushed to a trauma centre, one with life-threatening injuries and the other with non-life-threatening injuries.
Const. Michael Hayles said a third person was dropped off at a local hospital. They were later pronounced dead from injuries sustained in the shooting. On Tuesday, identified the victim as Madar Hassan of Toronto.
“We have sufficient information to believe that the third individual that walked to the hospital was present at this scene,” Const. Hayles said.
There is no information on suspects, but police say the shooting did not happen inside the mall.
“We do believe that suspects did flee the scene,” Const. Hayles said. “… We do have information indicating on the scene that several people fled on foot and in [a] vehicle.”
The homicide unit has taken over the investigation. A heavy police presence will remain on scene in the mall parking lot.
“In this instance, there is no current information that suggests the interaction between these subjects in this shooting was nothing other than an isolated incident,” Const. Hayles said.
The quick response from emergency services and mall security meant there was never a threat to patrons inside the mall, Const. Hayles said.
Although the investigation was only in its early stages early Monday evening, he said police believe the shooting was contained to the main floor of the parking structure.
