Bargain herald? Shoppers underwhelmed by Nordstrom’s 5% off liquidation sale

Nordstrom stores can begin liquidation sales as soon as Tuesday, after the Canadian retailer announced its Canadian exit earlier in March. Plus, Plus, a staff memo from amazon has announced major job cuts. Richard Southern explains.

Shoppers expecting major bargains as Nordstrom began liquidation sales at its soon-to-be shuttered Canadian locations were left underwhelmed on Tuesday after seeing paltry single-digit price slashes.

Nordstrom, which is winding down its Canadian operations, required court approval to begin liquidating — which it received on Monday.

But a day later, shoppers snickered at the less-than-satisfying 5 per cent off being offered on most eligible products.

The liquidation is expected to last until June, but it’s not clear if prices will go down any further.

In a statement to CityNews, Nordstrom Canada said: “We can confirm that most merchandise is 5 per cent off with the exception of select categories and products. We do not have details about any further discount at this time.”

Nordstrom is closing all six of its Canadian department store locations and seven Nordstrom Rack shops after announcing earlier this month that it was pulling out of Canada altogether.

The U.S. retail giant entered Canada in 2014, taking over massive retail spaces at major malls like the Eaton Centre, Yorkdale, and Sherway Gardens.

But despite being situated in prime shopping locations, the company said its Canadian stores lost money every single year, prompting a pull-out that will kill 2,500 jobs.
