The Toronto Humane Society is out with a message about their program for struggling pet owners after a dog was abandoned in a park with a heartbreaking note. Michelle Mackey reports.

Accompanied with a heartbreaking note, a four-year-old family dog was found abandoned in the Davenport area earlier this week, and the Toronto Humane Society (THS) is looking to provide support to the pet owners.

Max, described in the note as a “very smart” dog who is “good with kids,” was found at the Primrose Avenue Parkette on Monday.

The note goes on to explain that the owner lost their job and apartment and cannot afford to care for Max anymore, ending with “he’s a good boy.”

On their website, THS says the family’s “hand-written note tells us that they care, and they want what is best for him.”

To ensure they have a chance to stay together, the shelter is offering enrolment into their urgent care program, which they say not enough people are aware of.

Launched in 2020, the program provides temporary foster homes for pets whose families are going through difficult times, to give owners a chance to get back on their feet while their pet is well cared for.

“Parting with an animal is one of the most heartbreaking choices a pet parent can make. With rising costs and inflation affecting everyday expenses like groceries, gasoline, and housing, many of us are just one crisis away from being unable to care for ourselves and for our pets,” reads the THS release.

“Choosing between caring for your pet and caring for your well-being is not a fair choice – but unfortunately, with nowhere left to turn, this has become the reality for a growing number of families in Toronto and across the GTA.”

The THS is urgently asking Max’s family or anyone who knows them to reach out to the shelter.

Their bond is strong and enrolling them into the Urgent Care program would give them the opportunity to stay together,” they say.
