Victoria Day fireworks in Toronto, GTA: Where to watch and what to know

What’s Victoria Day without some fireworks? If that has become a tradition for you and your family, you’re in luck.

The Ashbridges Bay Victoria Day Fireworks event is being held at Ashbridges Bay Park, in the Lake Shore Boulevard East and Coxwell Avenue area. Festivities will start at 10 p.m. on Monday, May 22.

Event organizers promise this year’s fireworks display will be particularly dazzling, with a presentation of pyrotechnics “that will definitely impress.”

The fireworks display is weather-dependent and offers free admission. The show will last 14 minutes and can be seen on the boardwalk from Lower Coxwell Avenue to Victoria Park.

Closures will include Coxwell Avenue from Lake Shore Boulevard East to Eastern Avenue and Lake Shore Boulevard East from Leslie Street to Queen Street East.

Toronto police said resources will be in place in the area from Friday, May 19, to Monday, May 22. This will include the Mounted Unit, with officers patrolling on foot, ATVs, and bikes. This is due to the large crowds expected to gather over the long weekend.

Parking will be limited, event organizers noted, with the park easily accessible by public transit. Toronto police said the TTC is expected to introduce additional bus routes for the long weekend. These already include 22A Coxwell and 92A Woodbine.

Toronto’s police force also mentioned that bonfires and personal fireworks in city parks and on beaches are prohibited. Alcohol is not permitted.

“The service will closely monitor security issues and make adjustments to mitigate any potential risks to public safety,” a police spokesperson said.

“If there is a threat to public safety or obstruction of officers or other emergency services, officers will use their discretion to disperse crowds or lay charges.”

First fireworks event of the season at Canada’s Wonderland

If you prefer attending Canada’s Wonderland, organizers have got you covered.

The first fireworks show of the season is scheduled for Sunday, May 21. Fireworks will begin at 10 p.m. and run for approximately 15 minutes.

The display will feature more than 6,000 colourful explosions, choreographed to music and reaching heights well over 800 feet.

There will be an expanded presence of York Regional Police officers at the amusement park this weekend after several arrests were made on Saturday, May 6, during the opening weekend at Canada’s Wonderland.

On May 11, investigators announced “Operation Beehave” as police ramp up efforts to combat incidents of mischief, threats and unruly behaviour. Police urged parents to monitor their children as the recent reports of unruly behaviour involved teenagers.
