Man arrested after downtown Toronto assault; victim in critical condition

Toronto police arrested 42-year-old Robert Dewitt on May 24, 2023. He was wanted in an aggravated assault investigation.

A man is in custody and another man is fighting for his life in hospital after an assault in downtown Toronto.

Toronto police were called to the area of Yonge and Elm streets on Monday, just north of Dundas, after getting reports a man attacked another man.

Officers say they located a victim at the scene who was brought to hospital with life-threatening injuries. The suspect fled before officers arrived.

Police tell CityNews they believe the incident may have been a random attack.

Investigators identified the suspect as Robert Dewitt, 42, from Toronto, and released photos of him on Tuesday. He was arrested later that evening and has been charged with aggravated assault.
