Child dies in hospital after Brampton house fire, no alarms in unit: Fire Marshal

Ontario’s Fire Marshal confirms a child who was in critical condition after a Brampton house fire last week has died in hospital, adding that no working fire alarms were present in the basement unit where the family lived.

The child’s mother also died as a result of the fire at the home on Jade Crescent in the area of Torbram Road and Williams Parkway last Friday night.

A third person remains in hospital with serious injuries.

Crews were called to the home at around 11 p.m. and arrived to find heavy smoke and flames.

One person was found outside suffering from injuries and two others were trapped inside.

“Our crews made valiant efforts to go in and rescue two individuals from this fire, brought them out to be transported by paramedics to hospital,” Brampton Fire Chief Bill Boyes said at the time.

Ontario’s Fire Marshal said Thursday that the child that later died in hospital was around three years old.

“There were absolutely no smoke alarms in the basement where the family lived,” fire officials confirmed Thursday.
