Toronto, GTA under special weather statement with wet, muggy start to work week

The rain that began Sunday night will carry over into the start of the week with most areas picking up between 20 to 30 mm of rainfall. Peeks of sunshine will return late Monday before scattered showers move in for Tuesday.

It’s a wet and muggy start to the work week with some much needed rain falling across the GTA on Monday.

A special weather statement is in effect for Toronto and neighbouring regions calling for heavy rain until the afternoon.

“Rain associated with a low pressure system will continue to push into the region early this morning and tapering off this afternoon,” reads the statement from Environment Canada. “Heaviest rainfall is expected later this morning.”

The weather agency is calling for rainfall amounts of 30 to 50 millimetres, but says there is some “uncertainty with rainfall amounts and the exact track of the low.”

Environment Canada says an upgrade from a weather statement to a warning could be required.

CityNews 680 meteorologist Jill Taylor says things should clear up late Monday heading into the overnight. The guaranteed high on Monday is 20 C with a humidex value closer to 25.

“It is muggy, it’s a muggy moist air mass,” Taylor says. “”More rain returns at the end of the day (Tuesday). And then on and off gloomy weather for Wednesday and Thursday.”

The light rain late Tuesday will come after an afternoon high near 19 C. It will be wet again on Wednesday and Thursday before the sunny skies return in time for the weekend.

It is some much needed rain for plants and lawns in the GTA after a relatively dry start to June.

“Only about five millimetres of rain so far this month. Really lacking in the rain department,” says Taylor. “We’ll get back into the sunshine for Friday.”
