Toronto Raptors guard Gary Trent Jr. will opt into the final year of his contract, Sportsnet’s Michael Grange confirmed on Tuesday.
Trent Jr., 24, has been a Raptor since 2021 and is set to earn $18.5 million in the final year of his deal.
Grange also reports that Trent Jr. wants to remain in Toronto and that both sides will work on a longer-term deal.
Declining his 2023-24 player option would have allowed Trent Jr. to pursue a more lucrative deal. After July 1, Trent Jr. could sign a four-year extension worth $113.6 million with the Raptors.

Fellow teammate Fred VanVleet decided to test the waters of NBA free agency. The 29-year-old point guard opted out of his contract on Monday and will become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.
Center Jakob Poeltl is the other key free agent the Raptors will reportedly attempt to resign. Poeltl was acquired at the trade deadline from the San Antonio Spurs for Khem Birch and future draft picks, including a 2024 1st-round selection.
The 2023 NBA Draft is on Thursday. The Raptors currently own the 13th overall pick.
