Multiple homes destroyed in large fire at new Oakville subdivision

A fire at a construction site at a new Oakville subdivision gutted 10 houses. Melissa Nakhavoly has more on the investigation.

Fire officials say approximately 10 homes at different stages of construction have been destroyed after a large fire ripped through a new Oakville subdivision on Wednesday morning.

Footage from traffic cameras on Highway 403 showed several homes engulfed in flames in the area of Dundas Street and Ninth Line. The fire was first reported just before noon on Wednesday.

Several callers to the CityNews 680 newsroom described large plumes of smoke and flames billowing from homes under construction. The CityNews 680 traffic chopper flew over the scene and counted nine houses that were completely destroyed and two others that were badly damaged.

“Not far away are homes already completed and occupied,” says 680 traffic reporter Kyle Hocking. “Doesn’t look like there was much danger of occupied homes being damaged.”

Oakville Fire crews say no injuries have been reported.

The cause of the blaze has yet to be determined. The Office of the Fire Marshal has been notified.
