Toronto police are searching for a suspect and a suspect vehicle after shots were fired outside a daycare near St. Lawrence Market, with one bullet striking the daycare.

Police responded to the scene at The Esplanade and Market Street just after 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday for reports of a drive-by shooting and bullets hitting the daycare.

In an update, Insp. Michelle Olszevski said it is believed one shot entered the window of the daycare, which is located on Market Street.

Police said the daycare was closed at the time but one person was working inside when the shooting occurred. No injuries were reported.

“No children were inside the daycare and there were no parents dropping off children at the time,” Insp. Olszevski said, adding that the incident is “very concerning.”

Investigators say there were people standing outside the daycare and it is believed they may have been the intended targets.

“They are not associated with the daycare in any way,” Insp. Olszevski said.

“Through investigation, police have also received information from witnesses that the shooter may have been in a car. It has not been confirmed if the car was parked or moving.”

So far, no vehicle or suspect descriptions have been released.
