Police identify suspect in TTC subway stabbing, was out on bail at time

Police remain on the hunt for a suspect after a violent stabbing aboard a TTC train Thursday afternoon. Much of the attack caught on video. David Zura explains.

Toronto Police have identified the suspect in a subway stabbing that sent a man to hospital with life-threatening injuries and terrified riders who tried to dodge the brazen violence on a busy train Thursday afternoon.

He’s been identified as 25-year-old Moses Lewin.

Lewin is wanted for attempted murder, aggravated assault and assault with a weapon.

He was also apparently out on bail at the time, and is now also facing two counts of failure to comply with a release order.

Details of his previous legal troubles are not currently known.

What is known is that police allege Lewin pulled out a knife and used it on another man during a fight on the crowded train that was caught on video.

The video shows the suspect appear to stab another man as they fought. As a blood stain spreads through the victim’s shirt, he begins to run, yelling for help.

The suspect, knife in hand, chases him down the subway train as commuters scramble and scream. What happens next is not captured on camera, but a woman could be heard yelling, “He’s stabbing him up, he’s killing him.”

Police confirmed they were called to Eglinton Station at around 12:30 p.m., and located the victim on scene with multiple stab wounds.

Police later said the victim’s condition was upgraded to stable at hospital.

The end of the video showed the suspect casually leave the scene, walking along the platform at Eglinton Station in a nonchalant manner.

Toronto Police Duty Insp. Michelle Olszevski called it an “isolated incident” stemming from a verbal disagreement.

“This is not believed to be random,” she said in an update Thursday night, adding that it’s unclear if the two were known to each other prior to the confrontation.
