2 teens charged in Brampton carjacking; 1 out on bail on attempted murder charge

A 16-year-old who was already facing a charge of attempted murder is one of two people arrested in connection with a recent armed carjacking in Brampton.

Peel police say around 11:30 p.m. on July 23 a woman was in her Mercedes in the driveway of a home in the area of Heritage Road and Embleton Road when she was approached by someone brandishing a gun and demanded the keys to her car.

The woman complied and the suspect fled the scene in her car while a second suspect made his getaway in a second vehicle, a stolen Lexus.

Police later located both vehicles near Wheatland Court and Loonlake Avenue in Mississauga. The suspects then ditched the Lexus and fled in the victim’s Mercedes at a high rate of speed. The pair were later tracked down and arrested by police in the area of Yonge Street and Sheppard Avenue in Toronto.

At the time of the arrests, police recovered a 9 mm firearm with ammunition and an imitation firearm.

Tawayne Beckford, 19, from Toronto, is facing seven charges including robbery with a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm and possession of a loaded firearm.

A 16-year-old boy from Brampton is facing similar gun-related charges as well as four counts of failing to comply with a court order.

Police say at the time, the 16-year-old – who cannot be named under provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act – was out on bail after being charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, robbery, and possession of a prohibited weapon.

Police add the youth was prohibited from possessing any weapons and was under house arrest conditions.

Investigators say they anticipate more charges will be laid.
