A special weather advisory statement has been issued as the expected rainfall in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) may cause Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) rivers to experience higher than normal flows and water levels.
Environment Canada is forecasting rainfall for the GTA between to have estimated total precipitation amounts between 15 to 25 mm, though additional rain may occur if the system stalls or thunderstorms develop.
The Water Safety Watershed Conditions Statement will be in effect through to the end of the day Sunday.
Shoreline hazards along Lake Ontario may also be elevated due to increased wind and wave activity.
Slippery, unstable banks, and changing water levels could create hazardous conditions in and around rivers or other water bodies in the GTA.
Local ponds and other bodies of water classified as low-lying areas may also be impacted due to poor drainage.
All shorelines, rivers, and streams within the GTA should be considered hazardous.
Precautions around bodies of water due to changing water levels in rivers include alerting children of the dangers and supervising their activities, keeping children and pets away from slippery and unstable banks, and avoiding all recreational activities in or around water if possible.
If being around any bodies of water, rivers, streams or the Lake Ontario shoreline is not able to be avoided, the best practice is to avoid areas that may have been previously experiencing erosion or blockages with debris.
