Toronto man charged in connection with assault of 2 women on TTC bus at Wilson station

After a spate of violence on the TTC, new data shows safety and security is improving on the system. But as Tina Yazdani reports, critics are taking issue with one new safety policy.

Toronto police officers say a 39-year-old man has been charged after they allege two women were assaulted onboard a TTC bus at Wilson station in August.

According to a statement issued by the service Friday evening, the incident happened at around 8:10 p.m. on Aug. 18.

Officers said the victims were on the bus when the suspect allegedly approached them and hit both of their heads before taking off.

When asked about the extent of the victims’ injuries, a Toronto police spokesperson didn’t have an update Friday evening.

The spokesperson said the incident, which is believed to be random, was captured on surveillance cameras.

Since the incident happened, the spokesperson said TTC special constables initially began investigating and gathering evidence before it was forwarded to Toronto Police 32 Division officers.

In an update released Saturday evening, officers said Toronto resident Willfred Akiwenzie was charged with two counts of assault.

The allegations against the accused haven’t been tested in court. He was scheduled to appear at a downtown court on Oct. 30.
