Man released on bail immediately attempted carjacking, stole truck in Newmarket: police
A man who was released on bail in Newmarket allegedly attempted to carjack someone and then stole a truck right after he left the courthouse.
York Regional Police officers responded to the area McCaffery Road and Eagle Street West, just west of Yonge Street, around 4 p.m. Wednesday for reports of an attempted carjacking.
Police allege the suspect walked up to a woman in the driveway of her home and demanded she hand over her car keys. The victim refused and called police while the suspect left the driveway.

It is further alleged the suspect found a landscaping truck and trailer further down the street. Police say he stole the truck and fled the area.

Officers were able to quickly locate the stolen truck with help of the Air Support Unit and attempted to stop the suspect. During the takedown, police say the suspect crashed the stolen truck into several police cruisers.
The truck was eventually stopped. No injuries were reported.
Investigators determined that the suspect had just been released on bail for an unrelated charge. They say he walked a short distance from the Newmarket courthouse to where the attempted carjacking occurred.
Police have arrested 21-year-old Navjot Singh of no fixed address. He is facing nine charges including robbery and motor vehicle theft.
