Markham Public Library says Islamic Heritage Month displays to remain

The Markham Public Library (MPL) has released a statement regarding its Islamic Heritage Month displays after an email from an MPL employee on the topic was made public.

“The email is inaccurate. Markham Public Library regrets this occurred and we apologize for any confusion or hurt this has caused the community,” a statement posted to Facebook and X read.

MPL confirmed that the books on display for Islamic Heritage Month will remain present in all libraries for the remainder of October.

“MPL takes pride in showcasing positive contributions of our diverse communities through displays such as these,” the statement continued.

The books on display are a staff-created list, including 54 different titles for all ages, “are a great opportunity to learn about and celebrate the diversity of people who follow the Islamic faith, recognize their contributions to our global culture, and honour the rich history of Islam,” reads the MPL website.
