York Regional Police warn of brazen new bank scam

Scammers posing as bank investigators are duping some unsuspecting citizens into handing over their debit and credit cards, York Regional Police are warning.
Police say since December 2023 they’ve received several reports from people across the region, saying they’ve been hit by the bold scam.
The suspects contact citizens, posing as bank investigators who tell them their debit and credit cards have been compromised. The victims are then asked to provide their card numbers and PINs for verification purposes.
Once the scammers have that sensitive information, they tell the victims that in order to aid their investigation, someone will have to come to their home to pick up their cards.
The cards are then used to make illegal purchases.
“Several victims have reported losing up to a total of $20,000 as a result of the scam,” a police release states.
To avoid becoming a victim, police offer the following tips:
- Never give your personal or financial information to someone unknown, especially over the phone
- Press the caller for details if they identify as a member from the bank and verify their information
- Never provide your banking cards to anyone that comes to your home
- Please take some time and ask yourself: “Could this be a scam?” “Does it make sense?”
